Expectations are high as Egyptian voters look forward to electing a new president next week.

Twelve candidates are competing in the first presidential elections since the popular uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak last year.

[Ahmed Eid Ali, Supermarket Owner]
The first thing we need is security. We need to deal with unemployment and get jobs for the people. Egyptians who have graduated from universities with degrees sit at local coffee shops all day doing nothing. So we need all of these people to work, we need a president to find jobs for them, find them land or factories to work in.

Others see a need for guidance through the transition to democracy.

[Shahira Amin, Egyptian Journalist]
What we need is someone who will realise stability but also listen to the needs of the people which are dignity, bread, social justice, freedom, democracy – real democracy. And of course we need to educate the public because were taking our first, very small steps, towards democracy and its a long process. So we need him to walk us down that road.

The presidential contest, which gets underway on May 23, has become a two-horse race as polls put moderate Islamist Abdel Moneim Abol Futouh and liberal-minded Amr Moussa neck and neck.

While Islamist parties surprised many with the extent of their victory in the parliamentary elections, polls suggest that religion may play a less prominent role in winning the hearts and minds of Egyptian voters in the landmark presidential elections.

n>(Reuters) – General Motors Co (GM.N) will not advertise in next years Super Bowl because it is too expensive, the top marketing executive for the US automaker said three days after the company said it was dropping paid ads on Facebook Inc (FB.O).

The 2013 Super Bowl will be broadcast by CBS Corp (CBS.N), which is selling 30-second ads for as much as $4 million.

Spots on NBCs broadcast of this years National Football League championship game, the most heavily watched annual event on US television, cost about $3.5 million per 30-second spot. NBC is majority-owned by Comcast Corp (CMCSA.O).

We understand the reach the Super Bowl provides, but with the significant increase in price we simply cant justify the expense, GM global marketing chief Joel Ewanick said in a statement.

GM, which ran four ads during this years Super Bowl broadcast, also chose not to advertise during the Super Bowl in 2009, just ahead of its June filing for bankruptcy protection.

CBS spokesman Dana McClintock declined to comment.

When the New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots for the Super Bowl title in February, more than 111 million Americans tuned in, making it the most watched TV program in US history.

The NFL championship game annually draws the biggest viewing audience and advertisers jockey for the available TV spots, which makes GMs absence something CBS is not likely to miss, analysts said.

A couple of years ago, GM pulled out of the Super Bowl. I dont think that had too much impact on pricing, said Brad Adgate, senior vice president of research at research firm Horizon Media. Its an opportunity for others. I would venture a guess that someone would pick up the slack and see this as an opportunity.

The largest advertisers in Super Bowls every year include automakers, movie studios and beer maker Anheuser Busch.

GM, which ranks behind Procter Gamble Co (PG.N) and ATT Inc (T.N) in advertising spending, spent $1.1 billion on US ads last year, according to ad-tracking firm Kantar Media. Overall, GMs spending on advertising rose 5.2 percent last year to $4.48 billion, according to the automakers annual report.

GM spokesman Pat Morrissey said the 2012 advertising budget will be about even with last year. But GM has been shifting its marketing budget around, announcing on Tuesday that it would stop running paid ads on Facebook.

Ewanick has led a consolidation of GMs ad agencies globally that is expected to save the Detroit company $2 billion over five years.

However, Edmunds.com analyst Michelle Krebs questioned GMs decision.

It feels premature for GM to make such a big decision regarding Super Bowl, especially since GM will be launching a new line of full-size pickup trucks and full-size SUVs around Super Bowl time, she said. The Super Bowl audience is ideal for those vehicles and the timing is right.

Next year, GM will begin selling new versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, which analysts say generate profits of $12,000 to $14,000 per vehicle.

Mitt Romney has already repudiated a proposed independent ad campaign that would have used President Barack Obamas former relationship with the Reverend Jeremiah Wright to attack the president. It wasnt a hard call for Romney.

Obama is no longer a freshman senator from Illinois; he has been president of the United States for more than three years. The kind of ad envisioned by Republican consultant Fred Davis seemed designed to appeal to the emotions of the prospective donor, businessman Joe Ricketts, rather than those of voters. It had the markings of an entrepreneurial venture, not a strategic one.

In the political media business, most consultants still get paid a percentage of the buy. In the golden age of media consulting, 15 percent was a standard take. But clients have wised up over the years. So lets assume that Davis wouldve agreed to accept, say, a 7 percent fee. Thats $700,000 on a $10 million ad buy — the amount Ricketts reportedly intended to spend. From the looks of the ad story boards obtained by the New York Times (most likely from a Republican trying to stop the project) the five-minute ad couldve been slapped together in a studio from stock film and photos.

It might take days.

Davis is a Republican, but hes also a businessman. And a $700,000 fee for not a whole lot of work counts as pretty good business. The effort would probably not have done much for Romney, but it would’ve done fine by Davis.

One of the goals of Karl Roves American Crossroads super-PAC is to funnel the loose change of people like Ricketts to where it will do the most damage to Obama and other Democrats. Crossroads promises to keep fees and expenses low and the strategic quality of its ads and its geographic targeting high.

But politics, for many, is a business. And with ultra-rich guys like Ricketts looking to make their mark, there are plenty of consultants willing to give them what they want — whether it benefits Republicans or not.

Updated: May 8, 2012 8:06AM

Police in Hinsdale are warning dog owners about the threat of bird attacks after two reports of large birds — possibly hawks — attacking small dogs in the past month.

In one case, police said, the bird severely injured the dog. Both dogs that were attacked weighed less than 20 pounds.

The Willowbrook Wildlife Center recommended keeping small pets (cats, rabbits, small dogs) indoors and not allowing them to run free at any time.

When walking a dog, keep it on a short leash, the center said. And pet owners should keep an umbrella or coat available to make yourself appear larger if needed to scare away other animals, the center said.

The center also advised not leave pet food outside because it will attract other animals.

The following is an announcement from Centre Congregational Church:

#13;

On Wednesday, April 18, the Middle School Youth Group from Centre Congregational Church went to Nevins Farm (MSPCA) in Methuen, an animal care complex that provides shelter and adoption services for farm animals as well as cats, dogs, and small pets.

#13;

The nonprofit receives no public funds and therefore relies heavily on private donations and volunteers. The Youth Group members had collected toys, food, blankets, and more for the animals. At the farm, they presented the items, along with a check for $500, to Michael Keiley, the Director.

#13;

On an hour-long tour of the farm, the Youth Group members learned more about the animals cared for by the staff and volunteers, and about the issues surrounding animal surrenders and animal neglect.

#13;

If you’d like to learn more about the important work this nonprofit does, or if you’d like to donate or volunteer, see their web site: www.mspca.org/adoption/methuen-nevins.

The children gathered around MRFy (pronounced Murphy), a robot brought along by Consolodated Disposal to last weeks Hermosa Beach City Council meeting to help honor the 11 winning students for their anti-litter posters.

Over 350 students from Hermosa View and Hermosa Valley schools had submitted entries, with the winners being pulled from each grade, from kindergarten through eighth.

Mayor Jeff Duclos pointed out that businesses along Pier Avenue have agreed to display the artwork in their windows.

Wed like to honor them tonight, he said about the winning entries.

The competition was sponsored by education group Grades to Green and Consolidated Disposal (a subsidiary of Republic Services) as part of Earth Month.

We just kinda got an idea about it, said Sofia Ingloi, age 8, who worked with her fellow second grader Penny Robins, age 7.

We decided to do it because we dont like trash on the ground, Robins added.

In addition to being entertained by MRFy (Material Recovery Facility), the winning children received certificates for their work.

In addition to Robins and Ingloi, winners were Gracie Fojut, Reese Riley, Evelyn Sheppird, Belah Hruska, Kalea Lum, Genevieve Beimforde, Emma Padgett, Malia Kiger and Katelin Subbie.

The following letter was submitted by Sen. C. Anthony Muse, (D-Dist. 26) of Fort Washington.

#13;

“The Only Gaming During a Special Session Should be Doubling Down on the People’s Business”

#13;

Whether you support casinos in Maryland or not, one thing is certain, the proposed expansion of gaming will have no direct impact on the fiscal year 2013 budget. In fact, projected revenues from a proposed casino in Prince George’s County would not be realized for nearly six years, at best; and projected revenues from table games are a few years off as well.

#13;

Further, the expansion of gaming hinges on the voters of Maryland agreeing to support the referendum, which some may say is likely, but there are no guarantees. For these reasons, and many others, it seems irrational and irresponsible to tie the ability of the General Assembly to pass a responsible budget for this year to the condition that we send a question to referendum that may fail.

#13;

This is a gamble that I don’t believe the state should take.Governor Martin O’Malley was right when he said, “Our republic was not built on gambling gimmicks, bingo games or bake sales.” I believe that our republic was built on intellect, courage and humanity; and the future of our republic depends on brave men and women standing for the greater good and putting personal interests aside to get a job done for the citizens of Maryland.

#13;

We ended this session with the people’s business unfinished, because the special interest of gaming dominated the closing days of the General Assembly. As a result, Maryland must cut $512 million from education, public safety and other services.

#13;

In addition, tuition rates will increase at state universities, making higher education less affordable for our young people. My home county, Prince George’s, will likely see a $65 million reduction in state aid, resulting in cuts to k-12 education, public safety and other services.

#13;

I understand that Senate President Mike Miller and County Executive Rushern Baker have a desire to bring slot machines and table games to Prince George’s County, but I believe it is mutually exclusive from this year’s budget and should be dealt with during the course of the regular session next year.

#13;

I don’t believe it is worth gambling with the important issues that we as public servants must face today.

#13;

Just a couple of weekends ago, there were five killings and four shootings in Prince George’s, yet we are now risking cuts to public safety. Conditioning this year’s budget on gaming is at best poor judgment, or at worse one of the greatest abuses of power that this state has ever seen.

#13;

The state of Maryland is facing a structural deficit, and yet we allowed one special interest to potentially cost taxpayers additional money to bring the General Assembly back into session to pass the budget that should have been and could have been passed in the 90 days the people have allotted for us. If we allow gaming to play a role during a special session, shame on us!

#13;

We would be sending a message to the world that Maryland can be bought and bossed by special gaming interests, and that we are willing to sacrifice education, healthcare, public safety and transportation for the promise of revenues generated by slot machines and table games. I believe the people of Maryland deserve better of us. Let’s not gamble with their future.

#13;

The op-ed was edited due to an error reporting that Prince Georges County Schools were ranked last in the states education system.

The companionship of an animal is invaluable.

Yet for many current and prospective pet owners, finances rank among their top concerns.

Costs for food, toys and vaccinations add up, and, all too often, unexpected or preventable emergencies end in cost-driven decisions.

New pet owners can expect to pay up to $1,500 during the first year for a medium-size dog, with almost $700 in annual expenses thereafter, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The numbers for cats arent far off; just over $1,000 the first year and about $700 per year after that.

So if the kids want a pet and cost is a consideration, remember that goldfish, hermit crabs and lizards can teach sizable lessons on a minikin budget.

Pet chickens even give an edible return on your investment.

But for Colorados many dog and cat lovers, who may also be looking to pinch their pennies, here is some direction.

Before the homecoming

Animal shelters such as the Dumb Friends League in Denver and Castle Rock or Foothills Animal Shelter in Golden host cats and dogs of all ages. For the best deal on an adoption fee, consider an older animal instead of a puppy or kitten. Shelters offer these animals for less, and beyond that, older pets are typically more carpet- and furniture-friendly than their 5-month-old counterparts.

Adoption fees vary but usually cover the costs of spaying or neutering, initial vaccinations, and microchipping. Some shelters also offer more than just cats and dogs; small pets such as rabbits also may be available for adoption.

Dog lovers who have their hearts set on a particular breed, do your homework before buying from a private breeder. Unqualified private breeders can produce animals riddled with dormant health problems, and that could mean heartache and expense down the road.

When youre the patient

The organization Pets Are Wonderful Support, or PAWS Colorado, offers pet-care aide to seniors, individuals with disabilities and those with life-challenging illnesses. The organization is funded and operated completely by donations and volunteers. It provides clients with food, annual vet stipends and cat litter. Other services include dog walking, veterinarian appointment transport and, when necessary, refreshing litter boxes.

Executive director Rich Reynolds says the organization recently cleaned out its wait list and is accepting new clients. The greatest need for volunteer assistance is transportation, both in delivering food and accomodating vet visits. For information about services or vonunteering, call 303-693-1587.

More than an apple a day

Promote nutrition and exercise as the cheapest vet visit is the prevented one.

Accordingly, treating an illness is less expensive than combative surgery. So stay current on shots, and get lumps checked early.

For unavoidable situations, affordable vet care options include the MaxFund Wellness Center (1000 Inca St.; 303-595-0532) and Planned Pethood Plus (4170 Tennyson St.; 303-433-3291), both of which offer standard discounted rates. And, donor subsidies allow Harrison Memorial Hospital (191 Yuma St.; 303-722-5800) to adjust rates based on income: People on public assistance or Social Security qualify for the highest discounts.

Help them smile

Periodontal disease is a leading health issue for pets. Non-anesthetic, veterinarian-supervised teeth-cleaning is less expensive than a veterinary teeth cleaning, which requires blood work and anesthesia.

But Michael San Filippo, spokesman for the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), says that veterinary teeth cleaning is worth the expense. Beyond the need to thoroughly clean tartar under the gum line, a full oral exam is necessary to identify damage to teeth or locate growths or tumors. No matter how tame or calm a dog is, general anesthesia is required to get the full effect of an examination, he says.

One less expensive option is anesthesia-free dental cleaning, which is offered by some clinics and groomers. But the cheapest way to maintain your pets oral health between checkups is to commit to a regular brushing routine at home with animal-specific toothpaste.

Squeaky clean

One way to trim grooming costs, for those who prefer to keep fur and fuss away from their bathrooms, is to visit a self-serve dog spa. Shampoo, brushes, towels and smocks are supplied while the hair and mess are left behind; and all for less than half of a standard treatment.

Some breeds, such as poodles, require a full-blown grooming extravaganza. But for many, a $16 pet pit stop at a place like U-Shampooch Self Serve Dog Wash (7474 E. 29th Ave.; 303-321-5353) works just fine. If washing at home, U-Shampoochs Catlin Galligan recommends commercial dog shampoo over homemade versions or sharing human shampoo with your pet.

BYO treats

Julie Smith, Harrison Memorial Hospital director, offers this frugal tip: Obesity is a very common problem. You can save on your vet bill and your food bill by monitoring how much food you give your pet and exercising them more.

A balanced diet is key to an animals health, and often, making your own pet food isnt as cost effective as purchasing premium commercial brands. But simple homemade treats can be made with ingredients you may already have on hand, including flour, corn meal, vegetable oil and eggs. Allrecipes.com has a collection of pet food and treat recipes. Always consult your vet before introducing homemade foods; many ingredients such as chocolate, grapes and garlic can be harmful, if not deadly, to pets.

Thinking ahead

Pet insurance is catching on, and can often be the difference between life and economic euthanasia. Like human health insurance, rates and coverage depend on age, health, and potential risk. The ASPCA estimates yearly insurance rates at about $225 a year for a qualified dog, or $175 for a cat.

 Surgeries can run $1,995 for an average sized dog, says Heidi Haan with the MaxFund Wellness Center. With insurance, its important to know what youre getting into; what is covered or not, and what is covered or not for a specific breed. Be really clear.

If insurance isnt viable for your situation, figure out what you can afford to sock away each month, and start an emergency fund.

Playful, happy pets

Toys are not luxury items … just ask your couch.

DIY pet toy suggestions abound. But whether making your own or buying dollar-store wares, its always important to keep an eye on pets as they play.

Crafty cat owners looking for inspiration, meet Michelle Reilly, who opened her Etsy.com online store, called Squishe
, in 2007. Among other items, Reilly sells aptly named ugly sweater cat toys, constructed from scraps of discarded sweaters, stuffed with catnip, organic cotton and decorated like mice. She also sells $12 kits to make your own pet scarves. Kits include yarn, bamboo knitting needles, plastic sewing needle, crochet hook and instructions. The scarves are tiny, so the goal is attainable, and the skill (plus future related-savings) can last a lifetime.
